1908-D Half Eagle: Coloration and High-Grade Rarity
The natural coloration is often a medium orange-gold and rose shade. Less often, it is more green-gold in hue. It is hard to find 1908-D Indian Head Half Eagles with very good color as many have been cleaned or improperly handled.
The eye appeal on this issue tends to be a bit below average. The typical example is very scuffy and has an incomplete strike. Nearly every known Uncirculated example is in the MS60 to MS62 range because of the aforementioned abrasions and clean, high end Uncirculated examples are extremely hard to locate.
This date will prove to be very challenging to the advanced collector and we really like the long-term desirability of pieces that grade MS63 and above. If you are putting together a high grade set of Indian Head Half Eagles and you have a chance to buy a coin graded MS65 you should jump at the opportunity as only one or two examples per year are typically available.
