1911-D Half Eagle: Coloration Rarity in Higher Grades
The coloration is most often a light green-gold. A few 1911-D Indian Head Half Eagles have orange-gold hues. Many examples have been cleaned or dipped and locating pieces with original color is very challenging.
The level of eye appeal for this issue is well below average. The typical 1911-D has inferior luster and grainy surfaces with a sort of “washed-out” appearance.
The 1911-D Indian Head Half Eagle is not a scarce coin in circulated grades and it can be found in the lower Uncirculated grades without much of an effort. It becomes very scarce in MS62 and it is very rare in MS63. In MS64, this issue is extremely rare and the population figures listed by both PCGS and NGC are extremely inflated due to resubmissions.
