1911 Half Eagles: Striking Quality, and Proof Rarity
The eye appeal on this issue tends to be below average. Many 1911 Indian Head Half Eagles are not well struck and have granular surfaces with somewhat dull luster. There are some pretty pieces known, however, and these generally bring a premium when they are offered for sale.
A total of 139 Proofs were struck. These coins have a dark matte finish like the 1908 but with a slightly different texture. In terms of rarity, Proofs of this year are similar to the 1910. There are probably three to four dozen known with most of these in the PR63 to PR65 range. A few are known in PR66 and PR67 grades and these are very rare.
