1911-S Half Eagle: Luster, Coloration, and Eye Appeal Challenges
The luster on this issue is not very good when compared to the other San Francisco Half Eagles of this type. It is typically a bit on the drab side and usually frosty in texture. Coloration on the 1911-S Indian Head Half Eagle is invariably orange-gold with a slightly reddish tint. There are a decent number of pieces available with original color and the collector should be able to locate one with some patience.
The 1911-S Indian Head Half Eagle is an issue with slightly below average to average quality eye appeal. Some examples are not well struck on the obverse and most have somewhat subdued luster. The typical piece grades in the AU55 to MS62 range which was reflected by a small deal of these that were recently well distributed. MS-65 specimens are rare and prized when located.
