1912-S Half Eagle: Subdued Luster, Scarcity, and Premium for High-Grade Pieces
The luster found on this issue tends to be satiny in texture and very subdued. It is far less appealing than that seen on the earlier San Francisco Half Eagles of this type. The coloration tends to be light to medium reddish gold with an orange overtone. On original, higher grade pieces this coloration is quite attractive.
The level of eye appeal seen on this date is among the worst for any in the series. Most 1912-S Indian Head Half Eagles are poorly struck, have dull luster and show numerous marks on the surfaces. Any piece with good eye appeal is extremely scarce and is worth a strong premium.
This date is scarce in any Uncirculated grade and it becomes very scarce in MS62. The 1912-S is rare in MS63, very rare in MS64 and extremely rare in MS65.
