1914-S Half Eagle: Eye Appeal, Rarity, and Grade Distribution
The 1914-S Indian Head Half Eagle has below average eye appeal. The strike is not good, although there is less die deterioration at the borders than on the 1912-S and the 1913-S. Most pieces are heavily abraded and are dull. Any 1914-S Half Eagle with good eye appeal is quite rare and this is unquestionably the hardest issue in this series to find in grades above MS63.
Most 1914-S Indian Head Half Eagles are found in AU50 to AU58 grades. This date is scarce in the lower Uncirculated range and scarce in MS62. It is quite rare in properly graded MS63 and very rare in MS64. Given the fact that these populations include some resubmissions and crossovers, the actual number of coins graded may be much less.
