1915 Half Eagle: Eye Appeal, Rarity, and Proof Mintage
The 1915 Indian Head Half Eagle has very good overall eye appeal. It is well struck and has good luster and often shows pretty coloration. Most pieces are abraded but the collector should be able to locate a piece that is relatively clean and high end without a great deal of searching.
The 1915 Indian Head Half Eagle is common in lower Uncirculated grades and fairly easy to find even in MS63 and MS64. It is quite scarce in MS65. Interestingly, older references on Indian Head gold coinage state a small number of “superb, nearly perfect” pieces are known but these have either not been seen by the grading services or are now regarded as MS65.
Only 75 Proofs were struck, giving this the lowest mintage figure of any proof issue of this series. These are very rare with probably no more than 15-20 pieces known. Nearly all of these are in the PR64 to PR65 range. They show a coarse sandblast finish as seen on the 1914 Proofs.
