1916-S Half Eagle: Luster, Color, and Rarity in Grades
The luster is usually below average and it has a subdued, frosty texture with some granularity seen in the fields.
Examples of this date that are from the hoard are characterized by nice orange-gold and green coloration. Others show hues that tend more towards coppery-rose shadings. This date tends to have reasonably good eye appeal. It is generally seen with an acceptable strike and nice color but many pieces do not have great luster.
The 1916-S Indian Head Half Eagle is fairly easy to obtain in the lower Uncirculated grades and can with some effort be found even in MS63. It is very scarce in properly graded MS64 and very rare in MS65.
